Seeing things clearly: CT Scanner brings Cowbridge to the forefront of Veterinary care technology

STOP PRESS!! After months of hard work and planning, we are delighted to announce it is finally in! The installation of the innovative Asto CT Equina® CT scanner to expand the imaging capabilities at our Cowbridge hospital is now complete, and we are up and running!

We are proud to say that we are the first in the UK to install ground-breaking technology of this kind, which facilitates detailed advanced 3-dimensional x-ray imaging of the legs, head, and neck of a standing horse; but allows them to be in and out in minutes, with no or little sedation, and minimal stress or risk – a huge game changer for Equine Veterinary care.

Until now, CT scanning of a horse has not come without risks. Scanning legs has often necessitated general anaesthesia, so that the horse lay down and legs could be inserted into the CT scanners adapted from human hospitals. However, the installation of the standing Asto Equina® scanner, which is at the forefront of Equine CT scan technology, changes all of this. By allowing a horse to stay standing for the scan, the need for a general anaesthetic is removed, making it safer for the horse and a less expensive procedure.

Already in extensive use across the world, the scanner has been met with global rave reviews. In Australia, in an effort to cut racecourse mortality, no horse is permitted to take part in the Melbourne Cup without first being scanned by the Equina®. However, the scanner is not currently available for use anywhere else within Europe, and is without doubt, a big step forward for the UK.

The investment comes after months of work behind the scenes; as our Cowbridge-based Veterinary Surgeon, James explains. “We have worked towards this for a long time and are incredibly proud to be able to add this next level of care to our services. The Scanner offers the best possible diagnostic treatment available, at an affordable price, which is reassuring for all our clients.”

It comes at a time of big changes at the Cowbridge site, as we continue to expand and get ready to move the practice to a brand new, purpose-built hospital on the same premises in January 2025. The hospital will have stables for day patients and inpatients, and full surgical facilities, which includes our scanner."

“The expansion of our Cowbridge facilities reflects our commitment to building our offering to all our clients, old and new. The new hospital forms a key part of this – enabling access to world-class facilities. We cannot wait to welcome you all here.”
