Endoscopy allows us to examine and visualise areas otherwise inaccessible to our veterinary surgeons. The nasal passages, pharynx, larynx, guttural pouches and trachea can be visualised using a portable fibre optic endoscope. Video gastroscopy can be used to evaluate the stomach. Endoscopy is also utilised when investigating disease of the urinary tract.

We have multiple endoscopes available including video endoscopes that allow the image to be shown on a computer screen for our clients and an overground endoscope, which enables endoscopy of the upper respiratory tract to be performed during exercise/training, to evaluate exercise-induced respiratory noise and disease. Our endoscopes also allow us to take guided biopsies, which can be examined in our laboratory when required.

Video Gastroscopy
We offer video gastroscopy for the diagnosis of oesophageal and gastric diseases at our hospital and clinic.

Equine Squamous Gastric Disease (ESGD) and Equine Glandular Gastric Disease (EGGD) can cause disease in equids. The prevalence of gastric ulceration varies with breed, use and level of training. Symptoms associated with gastric disease include colic, inappetence, poor body condition, weight loss, poor coat condition, diarrhoea, changes in behaviour and poor performance.

The highest prevalence of ESGD occurs in Thoroughbred racehorses, but 17–58% of showing and sport horses can be affected and up to 59% of pleasure horses may be affected. Horses that are rarely competed and predominantly used in their home environment have the lowest ESGD prevalence of 11%.

Video gastroscopy is the only reliable method for identifying and grading gastric ulceration. Video gastroscopy allows complete examination of the entire stomach, including the pylorus and proximal duodenum where lesions may be present. Repeat gastroscopy can be performed to monitor the response to treatment. Our vets are experienced in identifying and treating gastric ulceration.
